Student Success Statement

"Courage is being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway."
                                                                                                       -Chae Richardson

Reflection: You try, you fail.. and you may try again and be unsuccessful but the truth is, its only truly a failure if you stop trying all together…Its the courage to continue which helps you succeed. You may face challenges where your courage is questioned. I would define courage as the ability to stand up for yourself and/or for others despite the fear of what may happen to you. I would like to think I am courageous, but I haven't really had to test my courage yet.

Student Success Statement

"Cowardice asks the question 'Is it safe?'
Expediency ask the question 'Is is politic?'
Vanity asks the question 'Is it popular?'

But conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' and there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it right."
                                                                                                              -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reflection: Creativity drives progress in all manners in society.  Dr. King’s reminds us that:  It is “Courage” that breeds this creativity.  That belief is both a revelation and inspiration to me. We all will face challenges the can affect us and others. King's challenge was the Civil Rights Movement, a challenge that wasn't popular, a challege that wasn't safe, but challlenge that was right.

Student Success Statement

"I will persist until I succeed"
                                                                                                 -Og Mandino

Reflection: Many view success in different ways. Small successes to one person can mean a huge success to others. We shouldn't base our success on others but on our progress. A major factor in this is persistance. Persistance is the key to success and can motivate you to do better.

Student Success Statement

"Persistance can change failure into extraordinary achievement."
                                                                                                       -Matt Biondi

Reflection: Such an inspiring quote from Biondi. Staying committed and improving you skill can lead to success. Through failure, we discover the flaws or mistakes we have in our formula, giving us the opportunity to correct it. Failure leads to succcess.

Student Success Statement

The answers to these questions willl determine your success or failure:
  1. Can people trust me to do what's right?
  2. Am I committed to doing my very best?
  3. Do I treat others the way i want to be treated?
                                                                  - Lou Holtz
Reflection: This reflection is very powerful since Holtz asks you truly important questions that can determine whether you will succeed or whether you will fail. He asks you questions that serve as guides to someone who wants to succeed, he asks if people can trust you to do what is right, and that of course represents trustworthiness and unless others trust you, chances are you will not succeed. The second question Holtz asks is on doing your very best and if you are committed to doing so, because if you only go for basic or strive for average you will not succeed and stay at the bottom, while those who are committed to being the best are those who will reach the top and truly succeed. His final question asks if you are fair and treat others how you want to be treated, and that is very important because you have to treat others how you want to be treated, if you don’t treat others the same you won’t receive the same respect and you will be lead into failure.

Student Success Statement

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. The relationship between the soundness of the body and the activities of the mind is subtle and complex. Much is not yet understood. But we do know what the Greeks knew: that intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong,"
                                                                                                                        - John F. Kennedy

Reflection: Physical fittness can provide a variety of benefits. Regular physical activity can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age. It can also reduce your risk of depression and may help you sleep better. John F. Kennedy addressed this issue because due to the rise of technology, people are becoming sluggish and are only stimulating their mind.

Student Success Statement

"No student ever attains eminent success by simply doing what is required of him/her; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction."
                                                                         -Charles Kendall Adams, American Historian

Reflection: In order to have leverage, one must not only succeed in what they are expected to do, but also excell past the requirements in order to stand out of the crowd. Everyone does the same work, however providing  more effort can make a huge difference.

Student Success Statement

"Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself."
                                                                                           -Henry Ward Beecher
Reflection: I feel that holding yourself to a high standard is very important to have a successful life because in the end, all you really have is yourself and your life. People leave, people die, people change their minds, people are so very fickle. But you need to be the foundation of your own life, so that you can always survive and thrive. So have high expectations for yourself, not matter what, because you expect yourself to succeed, you will manifest it in all areas in your life, no matter what others think or say.

Student Success Statement

"Goal setting is goal getting. Set and get."
                                                                                -Mark Victor Hansen

Reflection: By setting your goals, you'll actually commit to them and achieve them. Mark's "set and get" method can actually work. If you never set goals for yourself than you will never have a plan and you will be lost. For example if you don’t have your life planned out than you won’t know what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Student Success Statement

"The best way to predict your future is to create it."
                                                                                          -Charles Ketterer

Reflection: In order to create the future life that desire you need to have a clear vision of what you want. Having determined what you want, you need to adopt the behavior required to achieve it as well as determine the value why you need it so as to motivate the behavior to attain it. Going to College can be an example. But of course, there are always things that happen to us along the way that we can't predict, like getting hit by a bus.

Student Success Statement

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare."
                                                                                                     -Japanese Proverb

Reflection: Our thoughts, or visions, are simply ideas. If we don't act upon them, they simply become a figment of our imagination. Acting without thinking can prove disastrous results because we do not have a clear "vision" of what we are doing and acting on our emotions. Its is better to clear your mind and then take action.

Student Success Statement

"Adversity causes some men to break--others to break records"
                                                                                                      -William A. Ward

Reflection: It all depends on the person's inner strength as to how well they handle adversity. A stress a person faces can be turned into a motivation, and it is possible to overcome it. For others, its too overwhelming for them and it prevents them from progressing. Everyone can learn to overcome adversity by having a positive attitude.

Student Success Statement

"The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves"
                                                                                                            -Anonymous

Reflection: One must set goals and achieve them at their own pace. You shouldn't aim to be better than others, you should aim to be better than yourself, to achieve, to help, to learn, to love more. The victories that stick, the ones that build lasting confidence, are the ones where you impress yourself instead of others. It’s easy to win. It’s tougher to win when it requires you to be at the top of your game and constantly improving. But it’s so much more meaningful. In the same way, lasting motivation comes from the bars we set high for ourselves. Humans have a way of working hard to live up to our own standards. For the best measuring stick, look to your past and to your potential. More often than not, when you commit to being your best, the victories will come anyway.

Student Success Statement

"Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there."
                                                                                                      -Bo Jackson

Reflection: Always set the goals you actually want to achieve. Do everything you can to achieve your goal. Be careful not to aim for the impossible because unfortunately there is also the saying, "the higher you fly, the further you fall". The flight of Icarus can be an example.

Student Success Statement

"You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get."
                                                                                                                     -Michael Phelps

Reflection: Limits are barriers that the human mind puts on you. Barriers can represent any problem, from sports to personal. They give you the sense of not progressing, of not being able to continue. What Phelps is trying to teach you is that those "limits" are simply illusions. The more effort put into your "dream", the more likely your able to surpass those barriers of doubt and hopelessness.

Student Success Statement

"Try a little harder to be a little better."
                                                                                               -Gordon B. Hinckley

Reflection: If you put more effort into your goals in life, you will see improvements. Life is about improving your strengths and weaknesses. Reading what Hinckley says, much of the time when he says "do better" he means in the context of your situation. He means try harder at improving, and try hard so that people will admire and respect you, and so on.

Student Success Statement

"If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less-than-excellent work."
                                                                                                            -Thomas J. Watson

Reflection: Achieving excellence is relatively simple. You simply "quit" your bad habits and do your best in everything that you do. Focusing on improving your strength AND weaknesses is key to achieving excellence. The world is competitive so you must strive for the best and never settle for less.

Student Success Statement

“It’s not the will to win, but the will to PREPARE to win that makes the difference.”
                                                                                                               -Paul Bear Bryant

Reflection: Having the motivation to succeed is one of the keys to success but preparation can also help you in achieving it faster and more efficiently. In life “winning” can be defined in many different ways but each of us has our own thoughts about what will bring us some measure of happiness and security. Each of these could be defined as "winning" in their own ways.

Student Success Statement

“Righteous community unity starts with ONE upright soul, whether it is a community of family members, students, neighbors, teammates, or business associates. Unity conquers worthy pursuits more quickly with less effort than individual effort alone.”
                                                                                                        -Steve Haymore
Reflection: It only takes one person to share his ideas to others in order to grab their attention. Worthy goals are achieved more quickly if he has help from a community.

Student Success Statement

                                                   Together Everyone  Achieves  More
                                                                                        -Anonymous

Reflection: Working as a team can be a really important skill to learn. If you try, anything is possible. If you don’t try you won’t know the outcome and improve upon it. Working as a team means having trust in one another and never giving up.
