Student Success Statement

"Obedience is central to becoming, being, and remaining happy."
                                                                                                -David A. Bednar

Reflection: This can be questioned. Obedience involves performing an action under the orders of an authority figure. It differs from compliance, which involves changing your behavior at the request of another person, and conformity, which involves altering your behavior in order to go along with the rest of the group. Instead, obedience involves altering your behavior because a figure of authority has told you to. The authority figure may not be always right so we also have to be self aware and not blindly obey someone.

Progress Post

I've recently found my old notebook which had different goals! I decided to add the goals that i never managed to completed to my new notebook. I have 354 goals so far and managed to complete 127. I always continue to write new goals for myself, usually to explore and try new things. I plan to take my goal notebook to college and try to complete most them during my studies. I'll can try to read my goals daily but knowing myself, I'll forget a day or two. Nevertheless, I'll always complete at least one goal a day.

Class Reflection

1. What did you like best about this class
One thing I really enjoyed was learning more about Microsoft office and its programs. I had the opportunity to further master my skills in word, power point, and excel. I know it'll be something that'll be useful in the future for a career.

2. What did you dislike about this class?
One thing that i really disliked about the class were usually the assignments. The assignment, such as researching a medical career, was perfectly fine at first but it became repetitive. The repetition of posting became too much of a routine and that's what made many of the students lose their interest in the class.

3. What can you recommend to improve the class?
Possibly a variety of different assignments that involve the use of computers. Assignments that involve the programs we've learned about, or a typing test/competition to further motivate students to do their work and master their typing skills.

4. What will you always remember about this class?
I'll probably remember Mr. Haymore's motto, "choose the right!". It was something he would say everyday and it grew on me.

"When obedience becomes our goal, it is no longer an irritation; instead of a stumbling block, it becomes a building block."
                                                                                                           - James E. Faust

Reflection: In my opinion, obedience is good up to a certain point. Obeying your parents, your teachers and the law is acceptable to a certain degree. Sometimes what they instruct you to do isn't always right and we should distinguish them. Taking out the trash and "taking out the trash" have drastic differences. If not managed correctly, obedience can lead to manipulation and oppression.

Harmful Effects and Consequences of Drug Abuse

  • Drugs cannot only hurt you, but your friends and family as well
  • Drugs can become addictive and you will lose control
  • Drugs are used to escape real life problems but you escape them temporarily
  • Consumption of certain drugs can lead you to prison
  • You close yourself to opportunities
  • Drugs make you feel like you're in control but you really aren't
  • You have no one else to blame except yourself
The impact of drugs is apparent in almost every aspect of our society. We can see it in grocery stores, at restaurants, in professional sports, and on TV. Drugs truly holds a significant place in our culture. Alcohol is an example. However, the subject of alcohol often makes people a bit defensive. Some argue that it is wrong to drink at all, others hold the position that moderate drinking is acceptable, and many are unsure of their opinion, or have no beliefs about the “morality” of drinking. I believe complete abstinence is the highest and best way because of alcohol's effects on our nation, its influence on our families and social circles, and its impact on its users, both physically and emotionally.

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."
                                                                                                         -Benjamin Franklin

Reflection: Benjamin presents a common solution to a problem many people still have today, sleeping late. Going to bed early can make you body feel well rested and help you become more productive throughout the day. I personally sleep late as well, usually because I'm still doing homework by that time. However, there's another saying. "People that sleep later are more prone to be intelligent''.

"Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right."
                                                                                                              -W. Clement Stone

Reflections: Integrity is a characteristic that many of us value in ourselves, and it’s one we look for consistently in our leaders. But what does it really mean to have integrity. You could say that integrity is always doing the right thing, even when no one is looking, and even when the choice isn't easy. Or, you might see integrity as staying true to yourself and your word, even when you’re faced with serious consequences for the choices that you’re making. When we live our lives with integrity, it means that we’re always honest, and we let our actions speak for who we are and what we believe in. Integrity is a choice we make, and it’s a choice we must keep making, every moment of our lives.

"Courage is being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway."
                                                                                                       -Chae Richardson

Reflection: You try, you fail.. and you may try again and be unsuccessful but the truth is, its only truly a failure if you stop trying all together…Its the courage to continue which helps you succeed. You may face challenges where your courage is questioned. I would define courage as the ability to stand up for yourself and/or for others despite the fear of what may happen to you. I would like to think I am courageous, but I haven't really had to test my courage yet.

Reflection: I like to talk about painting with words, and the words we use in our everyday speech truly reflect our attitude. If we talk about gloom and doom, we will be constantly under a dark cloud. It stands to reason, that if we fill our language with words of hope and happiness, we’ll enjoy a sunshine day, regardless of what the weather man may have predicted. Attitude can determine the way you approach life. 10% of life is what happens and 90% is how you react to it.

Attitude

"A settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior."

  • Boldness
  • Arrogance
  • Defiance
  • Assertiveness
Attitude can vary from situation and person. People that usually have positive situations, like completing a goal, winning a prize, helping, etc, tend to more of a confident and optimistic attitude toward everyday life.
Others that encounter unlucky situations, like receiving a parking ticket, losing a game, or scoring low on a test, tend to have a more negative attitude.

Integrity

In a video we recently watched, our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was confronted with a challenge of integrity. He was offered  a drink by his coachman. Abraham agreed to drink with him, but wanted to tell him a story before they drank. When Lincoln was in his youth, his mother grew sick. She asked him to promise to never smoke tobacco or drink whiskey. When the he finished his story, he asked do coachman, "Now, are you sure you want me to break my promise to my mother?". "Cowardice asks the question 'Is it safe?'
Expediency ask the question 'Is is politic?'
Vanity asks the question 'Is it popular?'

But conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' and there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it right."

Reflection: Creativity drives progress in all manners in society.  Dr. King’s reminds us that:  It is “Courage” that breeds this creativity.  That belief is both a revelation and inspiration to me. We all will face challenges the can affect us and others. King's challenge was the Civil Rights Movement, a challenge that wasn't popular, a challege that wasn't safe, but challlenge that was right.

When You Tell One Lie

When you tell one lie, it leads to another
So you tell two lies to cover each other
Then you tell three lies and, Oh Brother,
You're in trouble up to your ears!
So you tell four lies to try to protect you
Then you tell five lies so folks won't suspect you
Then you tell six lies and you'll collect
A life filled with worries and fears
'Cause you can't remember how many lies you've told
And half the things you say aren't true
And sometime you'll slip up, you'll trip up and then
Whatever will become of you?
So you lie and lie without even trying
And each lie you tell will keep multiplying
'Till the whole wide world will know you're lying
Then you'll be
Suspected
Detected
Rejected
Neglected
Disliked
And you should!
When you lie, you're closing the door
On everything good

                                                                                                               -Tommy Lasorda

What seems impossible is actually possible if we put enough effort into it. We shouldn't let procrastination get in our way of succeeding. "Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence.
TALENT will not; nothing is more common thatn unsuccessful men with talent.
GENIUS will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
EDUCATION will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
                                                                                                           -President Calvin Coolidge

Reflection: When you work on any big goal, your motivation will wax and wane like waves hitting the shore. Sometimes you’ll feel motivated; sometimes you won’t. But it’s not your motivation that will produce results — it’s your action. Persistence allows you to keep taking action even when you don’t feel motivated to do so, and therefore you keep accumulating results.

Persistence will ultimately provide its own motivation. If you simply keep taking action, you’ll eventually get results, and results can be very motivating. For example, you may become a lot more enthusiastic about dieting and exercising once you’ve lost those first 10 pounds and feel your clothes fitting more loosely.

"I will persist until I succeed"
                                                                                                 -Og Mandino

Reflection: Many view success in different ways. Small successes to one person can mean a huge success to others. We shouldn't base our success on others but on our progress. A major factor in this is persistance. Persistance is the key to success and can motivate you to do better.

Student Success Statement

"Persistance can change failure into extraordinary achievement."
                                                                                                       -Matt Biondi

Reflection: Such an inspiring quote from Biondi. Staying committed and improving you skill can lead to success. Through failure, we discover the flaws or mistakes we have in our formula, giving us the opportunity to correct it. Failure leads to succcess.

The answers to these questions willl determine your success or failure:
  1. Can people trust me to do what's right?
  2. Am I committed to doing my very best?
  3. Do I treat others the way i want to be treated?
                                                                  - Lou Holtz
Reflection: This reflection is very powerful since Holtz asks you truly important questions that can determine whether you will succeed or whether you will fail. He asks you questions that serve as guides to someone who wants to succeed, he asks if people can trust you to do what is right, and that of course represents trustworthiness and unless others trust you, chances are you will not succeed. The second question Holtz asks is on doing your very best and if you are committed to doing so, because if you only go for basic or strive for average you will not succeed and stay at the bottom, while those who are committed to being the best are those who will reach the top and truly succeed. His final question asks if you are fair and treat others how you want to be treated, and that is very important because you have to treat others how you want to be treated, if you don’t treat others the same you won’t receive the same respect and you will be lead into failure.

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. The relationship between the soundness of the body and the activities of the mind is subtle and complex. Much is not yet understood. But we do know what the Greeks knew: that intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong,"
                                                                                                                        - John F. Kennedy

Reflection: Physical fittness can provide a variety of benefits. Regular physical activity can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age. It can also reduce your risk of depression and may help you sleep better. John F. Kennedy addressed this issue because due to the rise of technology, people are becoming sluggish and are only stimulating their mind.
